Strong on rooms, thin on function space

The island has more five-star rooms than function space to match, and that single imbalance shapes every programme decision on it. Written for an agency judging whether to put a client here.

What it does well

  • Beach incentives. The strongest reason to bring a group here. Long sand, warm water, and resorts built for people who are not working.
  • Gala on the beach. Sunset over water on the west coast, which is unusual in Vietnam and does a great deal for an awards evening at no production cost.
  • Visa-free arrival for international delegates. Thirty days for direct international arrivals to the island, subject to current conditions. For a mixed-nationality incentive this removes a genuine planning burden — but the conditions attached matter and should be verified per programme rather than assumed.
  • Single-property containment. Several resorts hold a group of 150 without splitting it. For an incentive where the group should stay together, that is worth more than it sounds.
  • Island activity depth. Boat programmes, snorkelling, the cable car, national park. Enough to fill a four-day programme without repetition.

What it does badly, stated plainly

  • Function space is the binding constraint, not rooms. A resort that sleeps 400 may have one ballroom seating 200 theatre style and two small breakout rooms. A conference of 250 with parallel sessions is difficult on this island regardless of budget. Verify function capacity before you verify room availability — the reverse order is how programmes fail.
  • Wet season is genuinely wet. July to September brings heavy afternoon rain. Programmes run, and every outdoor element needs a contracted indoor alternative rather than an optimistic forecast.
  • Access is a single point. One airport, limited international routing. A flight disruption affects the whole group with no road alternative, which is a real consideration for a large incentive.
  • Evening options outside the resorts are limited. The island is not a city. A group wanting nightlife, shopping and restaurant variety will find it thinner than a beach destination elsewhere in Asia.
  • Construction. Parts of the island are being built out. Property selection has to account for what is happening next door, and a site inspection resolves this faster than any correspondence.
The question to ask before proposing Phu Quoc

Does the programme have real working content? If yes, the island fights you and Da Nang is the better proposal. If the programme is a reward with a beach evening at its centre, Phu Quoc is the strongest option in Vietnam.

April – JuneHot, humid, occasional stormShoulderWorkable and better value. Beach evenings still reliable.

Cross-destination comparison is on the season calendar, which is where the commercial opportunity sits — Phu Quoc peaks when Ha Long Bay is at its worst, and vice versa.

Common questions

Questions partners ask most

What is the largest group you would accept on Phu Quoc?

About 200 in a single property, more only across multiple properties, which changes the programme substantially and should be discussed before it is proposed to a client. Above 250 we would usually recommend Da Nang instead and say why.

Is the visa exemption reliable?

It is current policy and it works, with conditions attached — direct international arrival, staying on the island, duration limits. Conditions have been amended before, so we verify against current rules at quote stage rather than repeating what was true last year.

Can a conference with breakouts work here?

Up to about 120 delegates with two breakouts, in a small number of properties. Beyond that, the island runs out of rooms before it runs out of ambition. We will tell you which properties can do it rather than implying they all can.

How far ahead for peak season?

Ninety days minimum above 100 guests, 120 for December and January. The constraint is function space rather than bedrooms.
